Fabric - A manufactured textile product made of natural, synthetic, or blended fibers assembled by various processes such as weaving, knitting, tufting, felting, braiding, or bonding. These processes, along with the inherent properties of the fibers themselves, give the finished fabric certain desirable characteristics such as strength, stretch, durability, etc.

Fabric Construction - Details about the structure of fabric. Includes such information as style, width, type of knit or weave, threads per inch in warp and fill, and weight of goods.

Face - the correct, top side of a fabric.

Factory Direct Linen - A leading manufacturer, importer, and distributor of wholesale linens for the hospitality, institutional, governmental, and promotional markets.

Fading - Loss of color caused by exposure to conditions or agents such as sunlight, washing, perspiration, and atmospheric gases that can remove or destroy the color.

Fiber - A unit of matter, either natural or synthetic, that forms the basis of a textile.

Fiber Reactive Dye - A type of water-soluble dye that is used when bright colors are desired.

Filament - A fiber of an indefinite or extreme length such as found naturally in silk. Manufactured fibers are extruded into filaments that are converted into filament yarn, staple, or tow.

Filament Yarn - A yarn composed of continuous filaments assembled with or without twist.

Filling - Crosswise yarns in woven fabrics that run perpendicular to warp (also called "weft"). Each crosswise length is called a pick.

Finished Fabric - Fabric that is ready for its intended end use, having passed through the necessary finishing processes.

Finished Size - The final size of the wholesale linen product after the sewing stage. If a certain "finished size" is required, the manufacturer must factor in the amount of fabric that will be consumed in the sewing stage and adjust the "cut size" accordingly. (Also see Cut Size.)

Finishing - All the processes through which fabric is passed after bleaching, dyeing, or printing in preparation for the fabric's end use. Examples of finishing processes include heat-setting, napping, embossing, pressing, calendaring, and the application of chemicals that change the character of the fabric.

Finishing Equipment - Machinery used to press sewn textile products free of wrinkles to prepare them for use.

Fireproof - A term used to describe a material, treated or untreated, that will not support combustion when subjected to a flame. While few textile materials are truly fireproof, many can be treated with flame-retardants to impart flame resistance.

Flame Resistant - A term used to describe a material that burns slowly or is self-extinguishing after removal of an external source of ignition. A fabric or yarn can be flame resistant because of the innate properties of the fiber, the twist level of the yarn, the fabric construction, the presence of flame retardants, or because of a combination of these factors.

Flame Retardant - A chemical compound that can be incorporated into a textile fiber during manufacture or applied as a topical treatment to a fiber, fabric, or other textile item to reduce its flammability.

Flat Dry Procedures - Fill washer to not more than 50% of manufacturer rated capacity. Unload wholesale linen products from dryer immediately after cycle is complete. Drape products across a cart, folding table, or similar surface as they are unloaded. Stack as high as handling will permit. Professional flat dry results can best be obtained by ironing.

Flat Seam - A low profile, plain seam as opposed to one with a thicker seam composed of multiple layers of fabric.

Fleece Fabric - A fabric with a thick, heavy surface resembling sheep's wool. Fleece may be a pile or napped fabric of either woven or knit construction.
